Sailboat stuck on Kauai reef
A sailboat reportedly went aground Friday at Moloaa Bay in north Kauai.
A Moloaa fruit stand saleswoman, Brandi Kaui, said the sailboat ran aground Friday. "It’s right on the reef," she said.
Kaui said she hopes someone does something about the wreck.
"I hope they don’t leave it on the beach," she said. "It’s going to leave so much rubbish, opala on the ocean."
The state Boating Division on Kauai was unavailable for comment.
Cabins receive $2.3M upgrade
The state cabins at Maui’s Waianapanapa State Park are closed for the rest of the year for $2.3 million in renovations, including construction of a new wastewater treatment system.
Cabins were not available for rent beginning April 1, although camping in tents will still be allowed by permit.
The renovation work includes refurbishing the interior areas of the cabins with new flooring, plumbing replacement and repairs, new fixtures in the bathrooms and kitchens, new kitchen cabinets and counters, new bunk beds, new window jalousies and related improvements for accessibility requirements. A variety of exterior improvements also will be made.
A key part of the work involves upgrade of the wastewater system with new sewer improvements including new septic tank treatment and disposal units approved by the state Department of Health.
Central Construction Inc. is the contractor. The project is expected to be completed by December.
