UC Davis shuts down Hawaii to salvage a win

Max Cordy threw eight scoreless innings to avoid a winless road trip by UC Davis, which scored early to beat Hawaii 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.

Cordy (7-0) scattered seven hits and struck out six to shut down a hot Hawaii offense that piled up 27 runs on 34 hits in the first three games of the series.

Tino Lipson and Nick Lynch each doubled and scored in the first inning for the Aggies (19-10-1, 3-3 Big West) against Hawaii starter Kyle Von Ruden.

Von Ruden (1-3) gave up three runs on three hits in two innings to take the loss for the Rainbow Warriors (12-20, 3-3).

Andrew Jones threw 6 1/3 innings in relief of Von Ruden and gave up three hits with four strikeouts. He left after giving up a one-out single in the ninth. It was the only run charges to Jones when Evan Hertig hit an RBI double on the first pitch by Cody Culp to make it 4-0.

Jacob Sheldon-Collins had two of Hawaii’s eight hits to finish 7-for-15 in the series.

Sheldon-Collins and Ventimilia singled to lead off the eighth but were stranded after Alan Baldwin struck out and Kaeo Aliviado hit into a double play.

Hawaii hits the road for a key three-game series at Cal Poly starting Friday.
