Silverswords snap losing streak
The Chaminade softball team swept Brigham Young-Hawaii 8-5 and 8-0 in a PacWest doubleheader to end a four-year losing streak in Laie on Friday. The last Silverswords win at BYU-Hawaii came in April 2011.
Coco Stewart and Theresa Capllonch recorded three hits each for Chaminade (10-34, 9-19 PacWest), while Jenn Betian recorded her fifth homer of the season in the nightcap.
Whitney Gustafson led BYUH (7-25, 3-19 PacWest) with three hits in the first game.
BYU-Hawaii tennis defeats Hawaii Pacific
The No. 3 BYU-Hawaii women’s tennis team romped No. 7 Hawaii Pacific 5-1 on Friday at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Leah Han thumped Sofia Tavitian 6-1, 6-0 to secure the win for the Seasiders, who improve to 27-1.
The Sharks (18-5) clinched their lone win on the doubles court as Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski edged No. 1 Karen Liu and Dallas Zhang 9-8. Zhang and Liu avenged their loss on the singles court, with Zhang beating Hancarova 6-3, 6-1 and Liu getting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hoynaski.
The Sharks and top-seeded Seasiders will travel to Surprise, Ariz., next week for the PacWest Championships.
HPU baseball sweeps Hawaii Hilo
Rico Garcia struck out 11 batters to lead the Hawaii Pacific baseball team over Hawaii Hilo 4-0 on Friday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Garcia allowed just two hits with one walk in nine innings. The Sharks edged the Vulcans 4-3 in 12 innings in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Jordan Kumasaka pitched eight innings and gave up 10 hits and no walks with two strikeouts for the Vulcans (6-26, 4-20 PacWest).
Chad Bolibol led the Sharks (14-18, 10-15 PacWest) with three hits in the first game and scored the second game’s winning run on a Vulcans fielding error. Bronson Aiwohi added three hits for HPU in the nightcap.
Hawaii Hilo’s William Cleary finished with a team-high four hits.
