Though Lemonade Alley is primarily a business competition, wherein youth learn about entrepreneurship by running a lemonade stand, there’s still the matter of the lemonade itself. Three lemon recipes — for a straight lemonade, a strawberry lemonade and a lemon smoothie — helped teams in three age groups win $1,000 apiece. Profits from the sales of each team are donated to a charity of their choice.
Fourteen teams set up their lemonade stands Saturday at Pearlridge Center, gave their business pitches and sold their refreshments, generating $15,485. Winning teams:
» Grades K to 4: Lemonade Crush, with members Ciera Fujiwara, Colby Gray, Eva Sandvold, Cameron Lombard andâMatthew Pien, crafted a strawberry lemonade and donated their winnings to the Hawaiian Humane Society.
» Grades 5 to 8: LemonAid for Love (Sierra Choi, Marina Choi, Callie Cayaban, Sara Brekke and Kanoelani Walker) made Lemon Cream Pie Smoothies; their prize money benefits the New Hope Christian Fellowship Nepal Mission.
» Grades 9 to 12: Hale o Wai Lemi’s (Sarah Champayn Look, LonDyn Sydney Look and Ethan Wyatt Look) lemonade will support Music for All, an arts education advocacy organization.
Lemonade Alley is in its fifth year on Oahu.
Other nonprofits that will receive funds this year include the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, American Youth Soccer Organization, BizGym Foundation, Blue Planet Foundation, Easter Seals Hawaii, Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation, Hawaii Literacy, Kapiolani Health Foundation, Make-a-Wish Hawaii, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii, Saint Louis School and Special Olympics Hawaii.
