No. 1 Hawaii falls to No. 6 BYU in 5 in volleyball

Senior opposite Brook Sedore turned in his third double-double of the season and senior middle Taylor Averill added 11 kills but it wasn’t enough as No. 1 Hawaii fell to No. 6 Brigham Young for the 13th consecutive time in Provo, Utah, losing the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season final volleyball match  22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 15-13, Saturday night.

Sedore finished with 21 kills and 12 digs for the Rainbow Warriors (23-5, 18-4), losing two in a row for the first time this season. Junior hitter Siki Zarkovic added 10 kills for second-seeded Hawaii, which hosts Long Beach State in Saturday’s MPSF quarterfinal match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Phil Fuchs led the Cougars (17-9, 14-8) with 22 kills and Brenden Sander added 16 kills and 10 digs. BYU, seeded fifth, will play at fourth-seeded USC on Saturday.

UC Irvine is seeded first and will host UCLA Saturday. The other quarterfinal match has UC Santa Barbara at Pepperdine.

The highest remaining seed after Saturday’s quarterfinals will host the April 30 semifinals and May 2 final.

Hawaii led 9-7 in Set 5 only to have BYU go on a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. The Warriors got to within a point three times, the last at 14-13, before a hitting error by Sedore ended it.
