3 rescued after boat overturns near Turtle Bay

Honolulu lifeguards and the Coast Guard rescued three men from the ocean Sunday after a wave capsized their boat about 1.5 miles off the North Shore.

The men were diving when a wave overturned their 16-foot boat about 10:35 a.m. off Turtle Bay, officials said.

Honolulu Emergency Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright said lifeguards brought two men back to shore on a personnel water craft, and the Coast Guard picked up one of the men by helicopter.

The divers, who are between 30 and 50 years in age, were not hurt. Lifeguards towed the men’s boat back to shore.

Enright said conditions at the time were windy and choppy with 25 mph winds and 12-foot seas.

The National Weather Service has issued a small craft advisory for around the islands until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Winds will be 30 to 35 mph with higher gusts and rough seas will be 9 to 15 feet through early Tuesday, the Weather Service said.
