Suspect in fatal hit-run released
Honolulu police on Saturday released pending further investigation a 40-year-old Kalihi woman arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash on the H-1 freeway.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and contempt after turning herself in at the Honolulu Police Department’s main headquarters Thursday night.
The crash occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday in the townbound lanes of the H-1 freeway near the Kunia onramp.
Keith Jantoc, a 25-year-old Mililani man who was operating a motorcycle, was taken in critical condition to a hospital and died. Autopsy results are pending.
Police earlier said they were trying to determine whether a sport utility vehicle deliberately struck him.
After receiving a call Thursday morning about a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot near Oahu Urban Garden Center in Pearl City, police recovered a black Chevy Tahoe with motorcycle parts lodged in its grille.
A photo of a Tahoe posted on the suspect’s Facebook page in August has the same license plate as the SUV seized by police.
Paddler is rescued off Molokai
Rescue crews came to the aid of a canoe paddler in rough seas Friday off Kawela in East Molokai.
A woman reported that she and a male friend, both Molokai residents, were making a downwind run in separate outrigger canoes when her outrigger broke.
The man gave her his canoe and told her to paddle ashore and call for help, the Maui Fire Department said by email.
The department launched its helicopter and a pair of JetSkis about 4:45 p.m.
When the helicopter arrived, the man was nearly back to shore and gave them the "thumbs up" sign indicating he was all right.
