The Towers of Kuhio Park are collecting donations to assist thousands of victims affected by Typhoon Maysak in Micronesia.
"The food items are the items that they really need at this moment," said Sass Gouland, Tower Resident Association president, who is spearheading the relief effort.
Nonperishable goods, canned foods, rice, ramen, bottled water, tents, tarps and cleaning products are being sought.
The April 1 typhoon battered the islands in Micronesia with powerful winds and torrential rain. The storm primarily affected Chuuk and Yap.
Five people were killed and thousands are homeless after houses were destroyed.
The storm hit close to home for Gouland, who has two brothers and a niece in Chuuk who were affected by the powerful storm. "Their homes have been blown off," he said.
His family members were not injured and have since moved in to their aunt’s home.
Breadfruit, banana and taro crops also were destroyed.
Donations can be dropped off at the Tower B parking lot, near the School Street entrance, 1545 Linapuni St. from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Thursday. Volunteers will be on-site to greet and help people with their donations.
For more information on how to make a donation, contact Gouland at 723-1085.
