Brashears, Torres-Costa dominate as Hawaii evens series
Tyler Brashears and Quintin Torres-Costa combined on a four-hit shutout and Hawaii evened the series against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara with a 1-0 victory on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
Kaeo Aliviado broke an 0-for-22 skid with a two-out single in the sixth inning to score Stephen Ventimilia for the only run of the game.
Hawaii (15-25, 6-8 Big West) needs a victory on Sunday to win the series against the Gauchos (30-10, 7-4) for the third straight year.
The 1-0 win was the second in as many weeks for the Rainbow Warriors.
Brashears gave up three hits in 7 2/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Peter Maris hit a two-out single under the glove of Jacob Sheldon-Collins in the eighth inning and Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso immediately went to Torres-Costa out of the bullpen.
Torres-Costa got Luke Swenson to ground out to short to end the eighth. Robby Nesovic led off the ninth with a single to right and was lifted for pinch-runner JJ Muno, who went to second on a bunt. After hitting Woody Woodward with a pitch, Torres-Costa struck out pinch-hitter Scott Quinlan and got Clay Fisher to fly out to center to nail down his fourth save.
