Fire heavily damaged two homes in Makaha Monday morning

A woman and child escaped from a fire that broke out at a home in Makaha near the intersection of Jade Street and Farrington Highway Monday morning.

Firefighters responding to an 8:25 a.m. alarm at a home in the 94-100 block of Jade St. arrived to find a home fully engulfed in fire and the flames spreading to a second single-story home, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Both homes were heavily damaged and unlivable, Fire Capt. David Jenkins said.

Ten people are homeless and were being helped by the American Red Cross.

A woman and child, who were home when the fire broke out, got out safely. No one was home in the other house.

The fire was reported under control at 9:10 a.m.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damage was estimated at $440,000 for both homes.
