Pagan nets basketball honor
Celina Pagan, a Mission College freshman from Sacred Hearts Academy, became only the third player in school history to receive all-state basketball recognition by the California Community College Athletic Association.
Pagan, a 5-foot-6 guard, was voted to the third team by coaches in the CCCAA, which has 94 women’s teams.
"That’s big time. Huge," said Corey Cafferata, coach of the school located in Santa Clara. "When she came here I didn’t think she was a guaranteed starter." Now, Cafferata said, "She’s going to do Division I."
Pagan, along with teammate LaChae McColor, a freshman from Moanalua, was named first-team All-Coast Conference while leading the Saints to a 17-13 overall record and 6-4 mark in the Southern Division of the Coast Conference.
Pagan, whose picture with a congratulatory message was displayed on a digital message board in front of the campus, averaged 21.6 points per game in conference play and 19.8 points overall, ranking her fourth on the school’s all-time single-season scoring list. The 5-9 McColor, despite playing much of the season with a broken bone in her ankle, averaged 12.1 points in conference, 11.4 overall. Another member on the team from Hawaii is Celina’s twin, Erica, also a graduate of Sacred Hearts.
Boyer collects softball accolade
Hawaii Pacific utility player Noelani Boyer was named PacWest Newcomer of the Week after helping the Sharks finish their season with a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade.
Boyer, a native of Carson, Calif., went a combined 3-for-5 against the Silverswords with an RBI in both contests.
