The FBI is asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 9-year-old girl, who is believed to be with her noncustodial parent, Brian Kirk, possibly on Hawaii island, the FBI said Monday.
The child, Brianne Kirk, lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., with her mother, who has primary custody, according to an email news release from the FBI.
Brian Kirk lives in Pine, Colo., but used to live on Hawaii island, and has extensive social and family ties there.
Kirk took temporary custody of Brianne Kirk on March 22 for a spring break visit.
He sent the girl’s mother a text message March 24 that he was flying Brianne Kirk to Kona, and they were going to camp on a vacant lot at 15-1982 20th Ave., Keaau.
Brianne Kirk was supposed to be returned to her mother March 30, but the FBI said that did not happen.
The FBI verified Brian Kirk and his daughter arrived in Kona on March 24, and there is no evidence they left by plane.
A warrant for Kirk’s arrest and a court order commanding law enforcement take physical custody of Brianne Kirk were issued in Jefferson County, Colo.
Brianne Kirk is white, 9 years old and less than 4 feet 5 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Brian Kirk is white, 57 years old and 6 feet tall, weighs 185 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of either Kirk is asked to call the FBI on Oahu at 566-4300.
Crew evacuated from burning cargo ship
Firefighters responded to a fire aboard a 100-foot cargo ship in Honolulu Harbor that forced the crew to evacuate Tuesday night.
The initial call came in at 7:40 p.m., and firefighters arrived at 7:46 p.m., said fire Capt. David Jenkins.
The fire was reported in the engine room.
Light smoke was seen coming from the bow of the ship, and the fuel was shut off, Jenkins said.
The Fire Department set up a command post on Nimitz Highway near Hilo Hattie.
A fire dispatcher said those aboard the ship had evacuated before 8 p.m.
