One teen was critically injured and another seriously injured when the sport utility vehicle they were in crashed into a tree Wednesday.

Police said three teenage males were riding in a blue Dodge SUV heading west on Kawaihau Road at 3 p.m. Wednesday when the 17-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a large tree and fence line.

During the crash, the back seat passenger, 18, was thrown from the SUV. He was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and then medevaced to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition.

Police transported the driver to Wilcox, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The 16-year-old front-seat passenger was taken in serious condition, and remained at the hospital in stable condition, police said.

Police said speed was a possible factor in the crash.

Police shut down Kawaihau Road until about 7 p.m., while police Traffic Safety Section investigated.
