University of Hawaii basketball coach Eran Ganot will apparently not immediately get a fourth year added to his contract to cover possible NCAA sanctions.
But the school has apparently signaled its willingness to revaluate the situation down the road after the NCAA completes its process, people familiar with the process said.
Ganot, who was announced as the successor to Benjy Taylor at an April 9 campus news conference, did not have an executed contract as of Wednesday, officials said.
Athletic director David Matlin declined to comment on specifics except to say, "it (the contract) is something that we need to finalize as soon as possible."
Ganot did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
He originally accepted a three-year deal last month but, in the wake of pending NCAA sanctions, subsequently sought an additional year.
Contracts beyond three years require the approval of the Board of Regents and the board and administration have been reluctant to grant them to coaches recently in the wake of a history of expensive buyouts.
UH was cited for seven violations in the NCAA’s January Notice of Allegations, three of them of the Level I variety, the most severe of four categories. It has until May 15 to reply to the charges.
Concerns over penalties the NCAA might impose, including a loss of scholarships or a postseason ban, have hovered over the program.
