Leilani Herrera and Annika Slattery each scored two goals and the Kapolei Hurricanes beat the Leilehua Mules 10-1 in the first round of the Stanford Carr Development / HHSAA Girls Water Polo State championships at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Wednesday.
Kapolei moves on the face BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii in Thursday’s second round.
Herrera’s two goals give her 11 in winner’s bracket games in her state tournament career, passing Nicole Hagi for most in the program’s history. The Hurricanes have been in the tournament every year since 2011 but have never finished higher than fourth.
Kalani 3, Konawaena 2, 3 OT
Mahie Lee scored with 1 minute, 13 seconds left in the third overtime as the Falcons beat the Wildcats in the longest match in tournament history.
Lee’s tally was her second of the game and gave the Falcons their first win in the tournament since 2009. Kalani moves on to face OIA champion Kahuku, which beat it 18-10 in the regular season.
Roosevelt 7, Baldwin 5
Kendra Bean scored three goals and the Rough Riders came back to beat the Bears.
Roosevelt, which outscored Baldwin 3-1 in the fourth quarter, moves on to face seven-time defending state champion Punahou.
Baldwin has never won a winner’s bracket game in the state tournament, falling for the sixth time in the first round.
Kamehameha 12, Kaiser 1
Cayla Moore had a hat trick and seven other Warriors scored in a rout of Kaiser.
Kamehameha faces MIL champion Lahainaluna in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The programs have faced each other twice previously, with the Warriors winning both by a combined score of 28-8.
