Hilo’s Brad Tavares and Ewa Beach’s Kailin Curran made weight for Saturday’s UFC Fight Night event in Adelaide, Australia.
Tavares (13-4, 8-3 UFC), ranked No. 14 at middleweight, weighed in at 184 pounds for his fight on the main card against New Zealand’s Robert Whittaker (14-4, 4-2).
Tavares had lost two straight before beating Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision in his last fight back in January.
Curran (3-1, 0-1) weighed in at 116 pounds for her preliminary bout against Adelaide’s Alex Chambers (4-2, 0-1). Curran lost her UFC debut by third-round TKO against Paige VanZant last November.
The entire event will be shown online on UFC Fight Pass starting at 5 p.m. Hawaii time.
UNLV’s Oda is MWC’s top freshman golfer
Nevada-Las Vegas’ John Oda, a 2014 Moanalua High School graduate, was named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year on Thursday.
Oda, who also made the all-conference team, has a scoring average of 70.48, which ranks fourth in the Mountain West. In 11 events this season, he has recorded seven top-10 finishes, including a victory at the Sea Best Invitational and two runner-up performances.
Oda is ranked No. 29 in the country, according to Golfstat.
HPU tennis receives five regional awards
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized Hawaii Pacific’s tennis program with five regional awards announced Friday. Hendrik Bode was named Coach of the Year for the third time in four seasons and has led the men’s squad to a perfect 21-0 record.
The No. 1 Sharks picked up three player awards—Thibaud Berland was named the Player to Watch, Yann Renault earned Most Improved Player, and Marko Lenz claimed Rookie of the Year honors. On the women’s side, Kristyna Hancarova took the Rookie of the Year.
Both teams compete Wednesday in the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
