Today marks the 10th anniversary of this column and in celebration I have scheduled a special event. "North Korea: A New Generation" will feature North Korean defector Yeonmi Park, who was named one of the Top 100 Women by the BBC last year for "raising awareness of the plight of her people in North Korea." There is very little known about North Korea and life there, and Park, who has been on a global tour, will share why she decided to defect. She will also speak about the hardships she faced during the two years of traveling through China and the desert before finally reaching South Korea, and life in her new land. Many North Korean defectors have a hard time adjusting to life in South Korea and some have returned to the North.
The presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 19 at Saint Louis School’s Mamiya Theatre. Get your free tickets at 808ne.ws/yeonmipark. Tickets are limited to two per email and you can print your own tickets for the event. Honolulu Box Office has a limited number of tickets so act quickly. Happy Mother’s Day!
