A Campbell team with nine seniors in its starting lineup had been through two excruciating semifinal losses in the last two state tournaments.
With only one chance left, these experienced Sabers finally broke through.
Tryzen Patricio’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Keola Himan with the winning run to give No. 1 seed Campbell its second consecutive extra-innings victory, 3-2 over Mid-Pacific in the Division I final of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball Championships.
The Sabers (16-2), who needed a gutsy 138-pitch, 10-inning complete game from Ian Kahaloa to beat Kamehameha 2-1 in the semifinals, grinded through another emotional nail-biter against the ILH champion Owls (14-4).
"This feels great," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "The last couple of years you go home heartbroken. More than anything else, you feel for the players, but we accomplished a goal again today. I can’t say enough how proud I am of these guys."
Campbell was eliminated in the semifinals the previous two years, losing 2-1 to eventual champion Mid-Pacific in 2013 and 3-1 to Saint Louis last year, which also won it all.
"Coming up short from the last two years, it really woke us up," Patricio said. "We all worked so hard for this moment. The returnees, three years and four years, have been working so hard for this moment."
Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said this year’s group didn’t equal the talent of their last state championship team but they had it in heart.
After giving up the tying run in the top of the seventh inning with Mid-Pacific down to its final strike, Campbell kept its focus to claim its first baseball state title since 1978 in front of a Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 3,635.
Dewayne Sprinkel, who had struck out in his first two at-bats, gave the Sabers a 2-1 lead when he crushed a ball over the right-field fence for a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
The home run was the second in this tournament and first in a state final in this stadium since Molokai’s Keahi Rawlins 16 years ago.
The lead stood until the bottom of the seventh, when Mid-Pacific Alexander Oley, who pitched the first five innings, reached on an infield single. With two outs, Campbell starter Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura was called for a balk, moving Oley into scoring position.
Owls shortstop Tyler Yamaguchi, who was hitting .600 (6-for-10) in the tournament, had a full count when he hit a slow roller to third.
Third baseman Zachary Kapihe charged to field it and fired to first, but Yamaguchi was called safe. Replays show he was out by a half-step.
Oley, who took off on contact, scored from second to tie the game at 2.
The Sabers loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth after MPI botched a rundown between second and third.
MPI intentionally walked Ian Kahaloa to load the bases for Villanueva-Hermosura, the pitcher, who hit into a fielder’s choice to go to extra innings.
Mid-Pacific struck first in the third inning when Jacob Maekawa led off with a double into the left-field corner.
One of three MPI bunts moved Maekawa to third for catcher Noah Shackles, who deposited one of his three hits into center field for a 1-0 lead.
Blayze Arcano-Llacuna finished with three of Campbell’s 10 hits.
