“I just had to find my groove. My fastballs were good, but everything else I tried to work on,” she said. “I’m really excited. I think we can make it all the way.”
Coach Shag Hermosura’s Sabers (14-2), the OIA runner-up, will meet Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin in a 1 p.m. quarterfinal matchup Wednesday. Leilehua (6-11), the sixth-place team from the OIA, has a consolation game Wednesday, 11 a.m.
A small, but spirited crowd at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium saw the Mules take an early lead on a solo home run by Reilyenne Nahulu, the second batter in the lineup. Her homer, lifted by a strong breeze blowing from right to left, didn’t get the Sabers down.
“I didn’t expect her to hit it out there,” Favela said. “My team told me to keep my head up, there’s a lot of innings to play, to keep fighting.”
Campbell responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Leilehua pitcher Chasity Stalcup had control problems early. After walking Cydney Curran and giving up a single to Nashlynn Anguay, she surrendered a single to center by her counterpart, Favela. Curran scored from second on the play to tie the game at 1.
The damage could’ve been worse, but Favela was thrown out attempting to advance to second on the play, and Stalcup retired the next batter for the third out.
The Sabers broke the game open in the third frame with four runs — only one of them earned. A throwing error by Mules shortstop Brandi Leong on a play at second gave Campbell a valuable extra out. Anguay scored from second on a single to center by Sierra Mariano for a 2-1 lead.
Moments after a conference at the mound by the Mules, Robinson went after an 0-1 fastball and sent a towering shot over the left-field fence 200 feet away.
“I was just trying to get a base hit. That’s what our coaches preach at practice, get the ball on the ground,” the junior third baseman said. “As soon as the ball meets the bat, you know.”
That pushed Campbell’s lead to 5-1 and Favela, by then, was in her groove. She struck out the side in the top of the fourth and benefited from a baserunning boo-boo by the Mules in the fifth.
Leilehua had runners at third and second with one out when Nahulu’s soft grounder was fielded by Caragh Morris halfway up the line. Morris tagged out Nahulu, then made the throw that led to a rundown and tag-out of Staisa Micky between third and home, ending the threat.
Campbell added an insurance run in the fifth. Mariano singled to right, kept going on to second on an overthrow to first by the right fielder, and scored on a single to center by Morris.
In all, Leilehua committed five errors. It was the fourth meeting between the teams. The Sabers won each time.
“I’m proud of these girls. They never gave up, just believing that they can hit and field with anybody,” Mules coach Stacy Araki said. “Campbell is a tough team.”
