Lihue couple escapes house fire

A Lihue couple escaped safely when fire broke out in their home, but the blaze caused $90,000 damage and left the couple without a place to live.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the two-story home located on Ohiohi Street at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The couple — a 48-year-old man and 51-year-old woman — were home at the time of the fire but were able to escape without injury, according a news release from the Kauai Fire Department. 

The fire was under control at 2 p.m. and extinguished by 2:50 p.m. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

The American Red Cross was notified to help the couple.
