Mylee Enos picked a good time to hit her first home run of the season.

The Maryknoll cleanup hitter blasted a grand slam to left center in the first inning to get the ball rolling in the Spartans’ 13-0, five-inning, mercy-rule victory over BIIF champion Waiakea on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Spartans (16-2-1), who got a combined one-hitter from Shearyna Labasan and Maia McNicoll, advance to play Mililani in the Division I semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships on Thursday at 7 p.m.

"It was a surprise to me that I actually hit it (the grand slam)," Enos said. "All I did was try to make solid contact. We’re prepared (for the semifinals) and we deserve to be in this position."

Labasan, who worked three innings in the circle and struck out eight, agreed.

"We’ve been working for this since last season ended," said the Spartans senior who will be pitching at Western Washington next season."

Enos, who went 3-for-3 with seven RBIs, drilled a two-run single during a three-run second as Maryknoll went up 7-0.

With run-scoring singles by Shayna Ige, Enos and Kanoe Tanigawa along with a sacrifice fly by Nohealani Hee, the Spartans’ lead ballooned to 11-0 in the third.

"At the plate, we’ve been focusing on two things since Day 1 — pitch selection and execution," Maryknoll coach John Uekawa said. "They can hit anything, slow or fast, because they can adjust. If one of our players strikes out, it’s because they swung at something they weren’t supposed to swing at. The execution part is what you do for others on the team. It’s a team concept. We have the (type of) team that can do it (win states)."

True to form, only one Spartans batter struck out.

Skylar Thomas had Waiakea’s only hit in the first inning, and the Warriors (11-4) got only one runner as far as second base.

"I told them (the Warriors players) that there are around 50 teams playing Division I in Hawaii and that we are one of the 12 to make it to states and that they should be proud," Waiakea coach Bo Saiki said. "We used three pitchers (Alyssa Hara, Kristi Hirata and Brandee Chinen). The first two are sophomores and the closer is a freshman. We don’t face teams like this (Maryknoll) in our league."

Added Waiakea catcher Taylor Nishimura: "We haven’t seen anything like that (the Spartans). We’ve really improved this year and really came together and it’s a good feeling to come to states."

Kamryn Kawakami doubled home Maryknoll’s final two runs in the top of the fifth.

Campbell 7, Baldwin 6

Nashlynn Anguay hit a two-run homer in a six-run second inning for the Sabers (15-2), who fended off an inspired comeback by the MIL champion Bears (13-2).

Baldwin’s Nawai Kaupe and Lyana Bermudez blasted back-to-back homers in a four-run sixth to make it 6-4. 

Fortunately for Campbell, Cydney Curran scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth for what turned out to be the game-winning run.

The Bears rallied for two runs in the seventh, but came up one run short.

Danielle Cervantes, Campbell’s starting pitcher, had a one-hitter going prior to the two homers. She earned the win and Elisa Favela got the final three outs for the save.

The Menehune used the long ball to parlay six hits into 11 runs in what resulted in a mercy-rule victory over the Cowgirls.

Kean Ratcliff-Hogan, Deannalynn Tafiti and Starlynn Ripley each homered for Waimea and combined to drive in five of the squad’s runs. 

Kiani Kamakea notched the win after allowing a lone unearned run on seven hits in the complete-game effort.

The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first inning and racked up 12 hits, including five doubles, off Pinelasses starter Claire Vila.

All but one Kamehameha-Hawaii starter collected at least one base hit and four players boasted two hits apiece. Warriors hurler Mykala Tokunaga picked up the complete-game victory, scattering six hits and surrendering two earned runs while striking out nine.

Despite allowing three runs on six hits and issuing five walks, Na Alii pitcher Poamai Tuli struck out nine, stranded 10 Saints on base and earned the complete-game win.

Aiea took advantage of five St. Francis errors, while Riley Tagawa and Kallie Alama led the way for the victors at the dish as both players notched two hits and a double.

Na Alii advance to Thursday’s semifinal matchup with Waimea at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium at 3 p.m.

Nanakuli 3, Pac-Five 1

Nanakuli freshman Cheyenne Lute threw a one-hitter and the Golden Hawks edged top-seeded Pac-Five.

Lute struck out six and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Nanakuli, the two-time defending Division II champion, advanced to face fourth-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii in Thursday’s 1 p.m. semifinal at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Waimea, the second seed, faces third-seeded Aiea at 3 p.m. in the second semifinal.

Mahina Piilani backed up Lute’s pitching performance by going 3-for-3 with a home run and an RBI single.
