Nelson Doi, who served as lieutenant governor from 1974 to 1978 with Gov. George Ariyoshi, died Saturday at his home in Waimea, Hawaii island, according to Cremation Services of West Hawaii. His age was not available.
Doi, a Democrat, was elected to a territorial Constitutional Convention in 1950, served for 14 years as a territorial senator starting in 1955 and served five years as a circuit judge starting in 1969.
After serving as lieutenant governor, he served on the High Court in the Marshall Islands and taught in Japan.
2 break into, rob warehouse
Hawaii County police said two males broke into a supermarket warehouse early Sunday morning and stole alcohol and other beverages.
Police described the two suspects caught on surveillance cameras as in their midteens to early 20s. Both had slim builds and wore dark shorts and light-colored hoodies.
The break-in occurred at about 1:35 a.m. at a supermarket warehouse on the 200 block of Kinoole Street. Anyone with information on the identity of the suspects is asked to call police at 935-3311 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
Help is needed with holiday lei
Maui residents are invited to help in a community lei-making event on the front lawn of the County Building, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Participants will be tasked with making more than 2,700 lei to be placed at the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao for Memorial Day.
Ample parking and a free shuttle to the County Building will be available from the War Memorial Ichiro "Iron" Maehara Baseball Stadium parking lot every half-hour from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; the last return shuttle leaves the County Building at 1:30 p.m.
Flower donations are requested; flowers and greenery may be dropped off between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the day of the event, at the South High Street parking lot fronting the County Building.
Pre-sewn lei are also welcome; finished lei should be 16 inches long before tying.
