Opihi picker on Maui injured in 50-foot fall onto rocks

An opihi picker was injured in Haiku on Maui after falling 50 feet from a steep cliff onto rocks below.

Maui County officials said firefighters were dispatched to Kepani Road at 8:39 a.m. Wednesday. A bystander reported he had witnessed the fall.  

The male victim was lying face down between boulders at the water’s edge, but was conscious and breathing when crews found him, officials said in a press release. He was airlifted by the fire department to a pasture where he was attended to by medics.

The victim, a 38-year-old Maui man, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with critical injuries.
