Selection committee recommends Takahashi as city clerk

A Honolulu City Council selection committee is recommending that acting City Clerk Glen Takahashi take over the job permanently.

The selection is expected to be confirmed by the full Council at its June 3 meeting.

For many years, Takahashi has been the city’s chief elections officer and deputy clerk. He became acting clerk after former Clerk Bernice Mau retired last year.

The clerk, by charter, is the keeper of all the Council’s records and documents including city ordinances, bills and resolutions. The clerk also manages the city’s election functions.

The selection committee, made up of three Council members and three former Council staffers, also recommended that Kimberly Ribellia, former chief of staff to Council Chairman Ernie Martin and former Council Chairman Donovan Dela Cruz, be named the new deputy clerk.

Both appointments are for six-year terms. Takahashi’s term would begin July 1 while Ribellia would start Sept. 1.
