Waianae man pleads not guilty in death of 3-year-old girl
A 25-year-old Waianae man pleaded not guiltyThursday morning to second-degree murder, abuse and contempt charges in the death of the 3-year-old daughter of his girlfriend last year.
Joshua Kalili entered the plea in Circuit Court before Judge Richard Perkins to charges of second-degree murder, two counts of abuse and contempt.
He is accused of killing 3-year-old Styzilee Reyes-Butay.
Police said Reyes-Butay had suspicious injuries on Oct. 21 when she was taken to the hospital, where she died. The Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death was blunt impact of the abdomen with intestinal lacerations. The manner of death was ruled homicide.
Prosecutors said the two abuse charges stem from incidents that occurred a year before Reyes-Butay died.
