A shark sighting at Kahului Harbor prompted the suspension of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association’s season-opening regatta on Saturday.

A stand-up paddleboarder reported being bumped by a tiger shark shortly before 11 a.m.

Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel were dispatched to the site but no further sightings were reported.

Seven events in the day-long John Wilmington III had already been completed when race officials were notified of the incident and moved to cancel the remaining races as a precaution.
