Two of the four starting second basemen in the Stillwater Regional of the NCAA tournament were from Hawaii.
One is moving on to the Super Regionals.
Arkansas second baseman Rick Nomura (Punahou ’12) started all three games and finished 3-for-12 with a double, two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base to lead the Razorbacks to their fourth Super Regional in seven years.
Arkansas went 3-0 to advance to play Missouri State next weekend. The Razorbacks will host despite the Bears holding a higher national seed.
Nomura was hitless in four at-bats in the clinching 4-3 win over St. John’s on Sunday. Arkansas scored the winning run in the top of the ninth.
Earlier, Oklahoma State, the regional host, lost 2-1 to St. John’s to see its season end with a record of 38-20.
Second baseman Tim Arakawa (Moanalua, ’11) went 0-for-3 with a walk and finished 3-for-12 with a homer, two walks, two runs and two RBIs in the regional. He hit the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cowboys their only win of the weekend, 5-4 over St. John’s on Friday.
Oregon shortstop Mark Karaviotis (Maui, ’13) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base and scored the Ducks’ only run in a 2-1 loss in 11 innings to No. 2 seed Iowa on Sunday in an elimination game.
Karaviotis finished 6-for-11 with five runs scored and three stolen bases in the Springfield Regional.
Oregon State held the advantage in the Dallas Regional heading into Sunday after games were postponed Saturday. The Beavers beat No. 3 seed Texas on Friday and played fourth-seeded VCU in the winners bracket Sunday after the Rams upset No. 1 seed Dallas Baptist.
VCU held Oregon State to five hits in a 5-1 victory. First baseman K.J. Harrison (Punahou, ’14) went 1-for-3 and drove in the only Beavers run with a sacrifice fly in the loss.
Oregon State then had to play host Dallas Baptist and lost 7-1 to finish the year 39-18-1.
Harrison was 1-for-7 for the day and second baseman Christian Donahue (‘Iolani ’14) was 0-for-6.
No. 4 seed Pepperdine survived one elimination game in the Fullerton Regional on Sunday, beating Arizona State 7-4 before being ousted by Fullerton 10-1.
Senior Kolten Yamaguchi (Konawaena ’11) went 1-for-4 with an RBI double against the Sun Devils as the Waves’ designated hitter. He started at catcher against Fullerton went 0-for-4.
