Dustin Poirier dispatched Makaha’s Yancy Medeiros via TKO in the first round on the main card of UFC Fight Night Saturday in New Orleans.
Fighting in his home state of Louisiana for the first time in five years, Poirier (18-4, 10-3 UFC) knocked down Medeiros (11-3, 3-3 UFC) twice in the opening stanza before eventually pummeling his lightweight opponent. Referee John McCarthy intervened at the 2:38 mark after determining that Medeiros could no longer defend himself as Poirier unleashed a flurry of punches while pinning his foe against the cage.
Medeiros, who missed the 156-pound weight limit by 3.5 pounds, saw his two-match win streak end.
