Maui police shot a man during a traffic stop in Wailuku on Saturday.
A patrol officer stopped a sport utility vehicle at Lower Main and Hookahi streets at about 4:30 p.m., Hawaii News Now reported.
An adult male passenger got out of the vehicle and fired a gun at the officers, according to a witness interviewed by phone.
The officers returned fire and hit the man, who was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
Lt. William Juan, a police spokesman, confirmed by email Saturday that a shooting in Wailuku was under investigation, but had no details.
Kauai man guilty of drug possession
A Kauai Circuit Court jury found a 59-year-old Koloa man guilty of possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Gary D. Ramos was found guilty Friday of one count of promoting a dangerous drug in the second degree, two counts of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts of promoting a detrimental drug in the third-degree.
On Aug. 12, 2012, police executed a search warrant at Ramos’ residence, where they found 13 grams of methamphetamine packaged in multiple small bags. Officers also found drug paraphernalia and marijuana.
Sentencing is set for Sept. 3.
