A decomposed body was found on Monday in Hilo near the airport.

Hawaii island police received a report at 8:27 a.m. Monday from someone who said they found the body off Kekuanaoa Street off the road under a makeshift shelter in overgrowth about a half-mile east of Kekuanaoa and Kanoelehua Ave.

The body, police said, was in an “advanced stage of decomposition.”

An autopy will be performed Tuesday to determine gender and cause of death, and fingerprints and dental records will be used to determine identity.

Police have classified the case as a coroneer’s inquest.

Police ask anyone who may have seen someone riding a white bicycle into the bush area in that vicinity during the latter part of May or early part of June to contact Detective Clarence Davies at 961-2384 or clarence.davies@hawaiicounty.gov.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300.
