Surfer Bethany Hamilton and her husband are celebrating the birth of their baby boy.
Hamilton and her husband, Adam Dirks, of Princeville, Kauai, introduced their newborn, Tobias Dirks, on social media Monday morning.
At 8:24 p.m. June 1, Tobias was born via home birth at 7.9 pounds and 21 inches long. Hamilton was assisted by midwives from Hua Moon Women’s Health, according to Hamilton’s sister-in-law, Becky Hamilton.
Tobias (“the goodness of God”) is named after Adam Dirks’ great-grandfather.
“Adam and I (are) so in love with our lil guy and are stoked to share life with him!” said Hamilton, 25, in her Facebook and Instagram posts.
The happy couple declined to be interviewed as they are enjoying time with their baby and adjusting to life as parents, according to Becky Hamilton.
“All is well and our family is grateful for the local support and love,” she said in an email.
Hamilton has been surfing competitively since a young age. At 13 she lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing at Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels Beach, on Kauai’s North Shore on the morning of Oct. 31, 2003.
She overcame the attack, returned to competitive surfing and turned pro.
The 2011 movie “Soul Surfer” was based on Hamilton’s autobiography, “Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family and Fighting to Get Back on the Board.”
Married in August 2013, Hamilton and Dirks participated last year in the CBS show “The Amazing Race,” on which teams of two people compete in a series of challenges at various sites around the world. The couple fell just short of winning the competition.
