Kaimuki fire caused by power strip malfunction

    Firefighters responded to a Kaimuki house fire on the 900 block of 9th Avenue on Wednesday. They contained the blaze to a single home.

A June 10 fire that destroyed a Kaimuki home was caused by a malfunctioning power strip, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

Investigators classified the fire as accidental and said it started in an attached storage room.

The fire caused $255,000 damage to the home and its contents at 925 9th Avenue. It also caused about $5,000 damage to a neighboring structure.

An 89-year-old man, who was home when the fire broke out at 11:35 a.m. was treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
