The Tennessee Titans wound up minicamp Thursday and rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota had a shout-out from Mick Jagger and a glowing testimonial from head coach Ken Whisenhunt to show for it.
The Rolling Stones played LP Field, the Titan’s home stadium in Nashville, Wednesday night and Jagger threw out a mention to Mariota, said Whisenhunt, who attended the concert and enthusiastically related the reference at the post-practice press conference.
"‘The LP Field, home of the all-conquering Titans!’" Jagger said between songs, according to a review in the Nashville Tennessean newspaper.
"After a tepid response, he shrugged. ‘Next year you’ve got Marcus (Mariota), anyway, right?’" the paper reported.
Meanwhile, after the series of rookie camps, organized team activities and minicamps came to a close, Whisenhunt concluded, "I think there is good reason to be excited (Mariota)."
"I think he (Mariota) progressed every day," Whisenhunt said of the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. "Credit to him and the way he works."
Whisenhunt added, "Like I said, Coach (Mark) Helfrich at Oregon did a nice job preparing him. A lot of it goes to Marcus and his family. He is really well grounded."
Mariota and the Titans have a six-week break until training camp opens July 30.
The preseason opener is Aug. 14 at Atlanta and the regular season begins Sept. 13 at Tampa Bay.
Whisenhunt said, "I thought he did a great job from where he started. He did a good job the first day that he came out here. But I think he is more comfortable. It is obvious when he is comfortable he plays a little faster."
Whisenhunt said, "The protection part of it was a big challenge, but we made a lot of progress with that, understanding the protection, especially with all the looks that we saw from our defense. So, he’s probably further along at this point than we thought he’d be, maybe (because) I don’t know if I had any expectations of what I thought that was gonna be. But, I think there is good reason to be really excited about him."
