2 suspects charged in Big Isle truck theft
Hawaii island police charged two people on Friday in connection with the theft of a truck.
Officers investigating a report of a suspicious truck in a driveway in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision identified the truck as having been reported stolen from a parking lot in Kailua-Kona in May.
As the officers were arresting the driver, identified as Isaac Abrojena of Ocean View, a female passenger identified as Cheyanne Collins, also of Ocean View, attempted to drive away in the truck. The truck struck an officer’s patrol vehicle, causing minor damage, and Collins was subsequently arrested, as well.
On Friday, detectives charged Abrojena with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $10,000. Collins was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and inattention to driving. Her bail was set at $11,000.
Collins has a history of trying to escape police.
In January, Collins, in custody for an unrelated offense, squeezed through the locked double gate of a holding cage outside a Kona courthouse.
Deputy sheriffs caught Collins, who was wearing handcuffs and leg shackles, five minutes later in a parking lot.
Abrojena is also familiar to Hawaii island police.
In November 2014, Abrojena was arrested while behind the wheel of another stolen truck.
In that case, Abrojena was found in possession of a sawed-off shotgun with ammunition, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was subsequently charged with auto theft, fraudulent use of license plates, four firearms offenses and five drug-related offenses.
