The state Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday that Peter Cabreros will become warden of the Hawaii Community Correctional Center effective Wednesday.

Cabreros, formerly chief of security, assumed the position of acting warden in January upon the retirement of the previous warden, Pete McDonald.

Cabreros began serving as a corrections officer at HCCC in February 1975 and worked his way up to chief of security in 2002.

Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda said in a news release: “Peter is a valuable asset to the department and is a committed corrections professional. He brings many years of corrections experience with him to this new position and I have no doubt HCCC will benefit by his leadership.”

Cabreros, as security chief, was responsible for planning, directing and administering the overall security operations, the Public Safety Department said.

He also served as a member of the institutional management staff and participated in the creation of institutional security policies and procedures. The chief of security acts in the capacity of warden in his or her absence.
