The University of Hawaii Board of Regents will retain its Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, the board said Thursday.
The Board had been scheduled to vote on a proposal to “reclassify” — or downgrade — the two-year old panel to a “task group” according to the posted agenda.
Instead, Regent Jan Sullivan proposed deleting any change in the committee’s status. Sullivan told Regents it was “premature to convert this committee to a task group.” She said she became convinced, “there are important unresolved issues” still to be dealt with regarding athletics.
The board established the committee in 2013 in the wake of the so-called “Wonder Blunder.” It is charged with oversight of the athletic programs on the Manoa and Hilo campuses.
Regents rescheduled a planned August “deep dive” review of the athletic department for an as yet undetermined date in the fall.
