Hawaii island police charged an 18-year-old Glenwood man in connection with a July 6 assault.
According to police, a witness saw Mikaele Carvalho entering a vacant property in the Fern Forest subdivision of Glenwood and leaving with a pillow case containing unknown objects. The witness confronted Carvalho, who then assaulted the witness, police said.
The victim suffered broken ribs as a result of the assault.
Police recovered a pillow case filled with 11 pounds of copper pipe from the scene.
On Thursday, patrol officers spotted Carvalho walking along a road and attempted to stop him. Carvalho fled, throwing a fanny pack into some ferns, police said.
The officers caught Carvalho and a subsequent search of the fanny pack revealed more than 17 grams of dried marijuana, a glass smoking pipe with methamphetamine residue, and a cut straw.
On Friday, Carvalho was charged with felony assault, promoting a dangerous drug, promoting a detrimental drug, and possessing drug paraphernalia. He was released after posting $6,250 bail.
