Hawaii Hilo announced the latest class to its Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame.
Dr. Edward Gutteling, Dennis O’Brien, Flavio Nucci and Edna Togiai-Walker will be inducted Aug. 26 at Nani Mau Gardens.
Dr. Gutteling has been a longtime volunteer team physician specializing in orthopedic medicine.
O’Brien was a basketball standout in the early 70’s when the school began competing collegiately.
Nucci was a member of the 1998 NCAA regional championship tennis team and has been involved with the Hilo tennis community.
Togiai-Walker was an NAIA All-American in 1989 and holds the program’s single-season records for kills (517), attempts (1333) and digs (557).
Tickets are $50 per person with tables of six ($300) and eight ($400) available. No host cocktails will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and induction to follow. Reservations and information are available by calling the Hilo athletic department at 808-932-7170.
Abunai 04 White Boys win U-12 division
The Abunai 04 White Boys went 6-0 to win the under-12 gold group during the Nike Crossfire Challenge Championship soccer tournament, which was held Friday through Monday in Seattle.
Abunai 04 White outscored its opponents 20-2.
On Monday, Abunai 04 White beat Wenatchee Fire B03 (Wash.) 1-0 in the semifinals and Crossfire Premier B04 (Wash.) 3-0 in the final.
Ota claims berth in U.S. Amateur
Jonathan Ota shot a 12-under-par 130 on Monday to win the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Leilehua Golf Course.
Ota, a Moanalua High School graduate, shot a 62 in the day’s second round. He beat out 31 other golfers to claim the lone berth in the U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields CC in Illinois from Aug. 17-23.
Donny Hopoi will be the first alternate after winning a playoff over Spencer Dunaway.
