The Maui Fire Department helicopter airlifted a 57-year-old visitor to safety Monday after he fell while hiking in Haleakala National Park in Kipahulu, fire officials said.

Hana firefighters responded at 11:12 a.m. to a call from a National Park Service ranger who treated a man who had fallen in the bamboo forest roughly 2 miles above park headquarters. The man, visiting from Sacramento, Calif., had been hiking alone. He lost consciousness for an unknown length of time before other hikers found him and called for help.

Park rangers had already begun carrying the victim down when the fire helicopter arrived at about 11:45 p.m. The victim was airlifted from near the second bridge on the Pipiwai Trail to a landing zone near the park headquarters. He was transferred to a medevac helicopter and flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Boy OK after falling ill on tour boat

The Coast Guard brought a 20-month-old boy to Maui Memorial Medical Center from a tour vessel in waters near Molokini Crater on Monday.

The Coast Guard Station at Maalaea dispatched a 45-foot response boat to the scene after receiving a call at 10:44 a.m. that the boy on the tour boat was unresponsive.

The response boat reached the tour boat Pride of Maui in 11 minutes and transported the boy to land, where he was taken to the hospital. He was treated and later released in stable condition, the Coast Guard said.
