Three University of Hawaii football players were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes Wednesday, including two who earned their third consecutive academic honor.
Senior offensive lineman Ben Clarke and senior tight end Harold Moleni were selected for the third year in a row while senior defensive end Luke Shawley was named for the first time. To be eligible, players must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better.
U.S. men out of medal contention
Poor passing again proved to be the downfall for the U.S. men’s volleyball team which was eliminated from medal contention when it was swept by Argentina 25-16, 25-21, 25-15 in a Pan American Games quarterfinal match in Toronto.
Former University of Hawaii All-American middle blocker Taylor Averill had just 10 attempts, putting down two for kills, and added a block. UC Irvine outside hitter Zach La Cavera, the 2015 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation player of the year, had a team-high six kills for the Americans, who will play Cuba for fifth place on Friday.
Tinman walk-in registration due Thursday
Thursday is the final day walk-in registrations will be accepted for Sunday’s 35th Tinman triathlon.
Applications are available at tinmanhawaii.com and must be delivered to The Bike Shop at 1149 South King Street by 8 p.m.
Sunday’s race is comprised of a 750-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run. The first wave of swimmers will go off at 5:30 a.m. at Queen’s Beach.
Transpac leaders expected soon
Transpacific Yacht Race leaders are expected to arrive Friday morning in Honolulu.
Elapsed time leader Santa Cruz 37 Celebrity was 425 miles from the finish as of Wednesday afternoon. J/44 Patriot, the leader based on corrected time, has 500 miles remaining on the California to Hawaii yacht race.
HPU adds another transfer
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team added UC Davis transfer Brianne Yasukochi to its roster.
Yasukochi appeared in 45 games during two seasons with the Aggies, scoring a total of 36 points. Yasukochi will be one of three Division I transfers joining HPU for the upcoming season.
