Kailua quarterback Noah Auld threw five touchdown passes, four to Martin Tigilau, and the Surfriders pulled away from Castle 34-24 in the renewal of the schools’ Windward Oahu rivalry.
Kailua took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter of the preseason game before Auld, who passed for 189 yards, connected with Tigilau on three scoring passes in the period to give Kailua control at Alex Kane Stadium.
“They’ve been together since they were freshmen, all of them in the receiving corps,” Kailua coach Joseph Wong said. “He has a good chemistry with all the receivers.”
The win was Kailua’s first win since beating Kaimuki on Sept. 21, 2013 and ended a 10-game skid after going 0-7 in Wong’s first season as head coach.
“Some will say it’s a preseason win, not regular season, but it’s good to get one under your belt,” Wong said. “Everybody started somewhere.”
Kailua’s fourth quarter outburst gave the Surfriders separation from a Castle offense led by quarterback Willie Ewaliko’s 290 passing yards. Ewaliko threw four touchdown passes, two to Jeremy McGoldrick, who finished with 181 receiving yards.
After the OIA’s realignment last year separated the rivals — Kailua in the OIA Blue and Castle in the Red — the hiatus in the series was expected to extend another year. But both teams had their originally scheduled opponents for Friday’s openers, Pearl City and Waipahu, pull out of their games due to shortages of eligible players.
Rather than play scrimmages against their shorthanded opponents, the OIA instead paired the Surfriders and Knights in a nonconference game.
After a scoreless first quarter McGoldrick sparked the Knights with a 39-yard reception down the sideline. Ewaliko looked his way again three plays later and McGoldrick ran down a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Kailua drove inside Castle’s 30 on three of its first four possessions, but twice lost the ball on downs and fumble at the Knights’ 20.
The defense held after the turnover and the Surfriders managed to finish the ensuing drive with Martin Tigilau’s 4-yard reception off a tipped pass in the end zone for the tying touchdown with 1:45 left before halftime.
Ewaliko tested the Kailua secondary deep again but Kalei Kealoha-Machado came down with an interception. Auld capped a six-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Christian Mejia with six seconds left. The duo connected again on the 2-point conversion and Kailua took a 14-6 lead into halftime.
McGoldrick struck again on Castle’s second possession of the third quarter, this time on a 33-yard touchdown grab.
Kailua retained the lead when the 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete and took command on the opening play of the fourth quarter. With the Surfriders facing fourth-and-three at the Castle 29, Auld lofted a pass down the left side to Tigilau for their second touchdown connection of the night.
Castle came up short on an attempted a fake punt from their 25 and Auld hit Tigilau for a 20-yard score to give the Surfriders a 28-12 lead. They then connected on a 10-yard score with 6:07 left.
Ewaliko threw two touchdowns late in the quarter to account for the final margin.
Kailua opens the regular season against Leilehua in a crossover game on Aug. 14. Castle faces Campbell at Aloha Stadium on Aug. 15.
