The Hawaii men’s basketball team paid a visit to Waikiki Elementary School on Friday morning to read books to children.
Most of the team was present and was well received.
“It’s something we look forward to doing more of,” said first-year UH coach Eran Ganot. “Activities like this, No. 1, is for the kids, and anything we can do to give back to them and to the community we’re all for. And it’s great for our program, great for our guys, to continue to remind them they’re in positions of influence and abilities to affect lives in a positive way.”
It was the second straight year the Rainbow Warriors read at the school.
Ma’a named to U.S. U-19 volleyball team
Recent Punahou graduate Micah Ma’a is one of 12 players who will represent the United States at the FIVB Boys U-19 World Championship later this month in Argentina.
Ma’a, a setter bound for UCLA, is one of seven returnees from the U.S. Boys Youth National Team that won a gold medal at the 2014 NORCECA Youth Continental Championship. At that event, Ma’a was named Best Setter.
The U-19 tournament is Aug. 14-23. The U.S opens pool play against Turkey on Aug. 14, followed by matches with Belgium, France and Argentina.
Bourne, Hyden unbeaten in Seattle Open
Hawaii’s Tri Bourne teamed with John Hyden to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals of the AVP Kingston Seattle Open, needing to defeat several teams with Hawaii ties to do so.
Third-seeded Bourne (Academy of the Pacific) and Hyden topped Punahou graduates Maddison and Riley McKibbin 21-15, 21-12 in the first round, then swept sixth-seeded Trevor Crabb (Punahou) and Ty Tramble 21-12, 21-15.
On Saturday, Bourne-Hyden face Dalhausser-Lucerna, with the losers dropping into the contender’s bracket. Crabb-Tramble meet Avery Drost-Russ Marchewka in a contender’s match, with the winners keeping their hopes alive to move back into title contention.
The tournament runs through Sunday on Lake Sammamish, the first time the pro circuit is in Seattle since 1990.
Chaminade men’s soccer adds 4
Chaminade bolstered its men’s soccer ranks on Friday with the announcement of four new players by coach Zach Kingsley.
Ryan Arkelian, Kevin Anderson, Cody Kuge and Charlie Gonzalez signed letters of intent to play for the Silverswords in the upcoming 2015 season. Anderson and Kuge excelled at Kaiser High.
Moanalua graduate Tyler Morton and Jake Brady of Portland, Ore., were the team’s previous additions.
Dorian wins Maldives competition
Hawaii’s Shane Dorian posted a near-perfect heat total of 19.60 to defeat Neco Padaratz (17.93) and take the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy Thruster Division on Friday.
Dorian moves through to the grand final for the Champions Trophy and will face Dave Rastovich of Australia.
