Visitation at Waiawa Correctional Facility in central Oahu was canceled Saturday due to a power outage, the Department of Public Safety said.
At about 9:30 p.m. Friday, the facility reported a power outage due to a downed power line in the area. The facility went to backup generators.
Hawaiian Electric Co. crews restored power at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, and the department said visitation would be held Sunday.
Break cuts water to hundreds
More than 500 Board of Water Supply customers in Makakilo were without service Saturday due to a break in a 12-inch water main along Palahia Street.
The break was reported shortly before noon. Water wagons were dispatched to supply water to affected homes.
Traffic was contraflowed on Palahia Street while BWS crews worked to repair the break.
Boater likely drowned off Kamalo Wharf
A 62-year-old Kawela man died Saturday in an apparent drowning off Kamalo Wharf on Molokai.
A witness saw the man securing his 26-foot catamaran near the wharf. The witness later alerted authorities when he saw the boat drifting downwind without the operator on board.
Firefighters responding to the 12:21 p.m. call located the vessel near the wharf and initiated a search for the missing operator.
Around 1 p.m., rescue personnel on watercraft found the missing man unresponsive and not breathing in waters 300 yards downwind of the wharf.
The man was brought to shore, where emergency responders tried to save his life. He was transported to Molokai General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Kawaihae brush fire spurs evacuation
A brush fire in Kawaihae prompted the evacuation of Spencer Beach Park and Kawaihae Village on Saturday.
Emergency shelters were opened at Thelma Parker Gym in Waimea and at Waikoloa Park.
Police also closed Kawaihae Road from the 62-mile marker and Queen Kaahumanu Highway north of Puako Drive.
Motorists were advised to use alternate routes, including Kohala Mountain Road.
Meanwhile, Maui firefighters extinguished a pair of early-morning fires burning within a sugar cane field off Baldwin Avenue in Paia on Friday.
Firefighters responding to a 2:40 a.m. alarm found the fires burning just mauka of Paia Gym, on the Kahului side of Baldwin Avenue. The fires, located about 200 yards apart, were brought under control within 10 minutes. Each burned approximately 2,000 square feet.
