KAILUA-KONA, >>Fire crews are working to control a blaze that’s spread across more than 4,650 acres on Hawaii island.

West Hawaii Today reports the fire started Saturday from an unknown source and had crews protecting two neighborhoods that were temporarily evacuated.

No structures were damaged.

Part of Highway 270 closed when a pile of timber near Kawaihae Harbor caught fire and filled the area with dark smoke. Several other roads closed as well, and were reopened by 3:30 p.m.

Helicopters dumped water near North Kohala Road through sunset on Sunday and five units monitored the blaze overnight.

Meanwhile, the nine-day old Poamoha fire above Wahiawa as 85 percent contained Sunday in rough and steep terrain. About 35 state firefighters conducted operations around the fire’s perimeter Sunday and mopped up hot stopts.
