Pearl City’s Mariel Galdiano shot a 2-under 70 to finish tied for fifth at the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Tuesday in Portland, Ore.
Galdiano’s two-round total of 140 advanced her to the single-elimination match play that begins Wednesday. Galdiano, a senior at Punahou, is a three-time girls state champion. Angel Yin and Jennifer Hahn shared medalist honors at 6-under 138.
Kailua’s Malia Nam (74-71—145) was among the top 64 players that advanced to match play. Honolulu’s Aiko Leong (150) and Marissa Chow (153) missed the cut.
Waipio rallies to beat Arizona
Waipio scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally by Arizona 12-9 on Tuesday at the Little League Baseball Western Regional in San Bernardino, Calif.
Vance Oshiro and Hunter Sasaki each had three hits in the win. Vincent Ogasawara drove in four runs for Waipio, which will face Nevada in an elimination game Wednesday at 4 p.m. Hawaii time. The game will be streamed online at ESPN3.com.
Chaminade basketball adds transfers
Chaminade women’s basketball coach Bobby Keanini announced Tuesday that two transfers will be joining his team for the upcoming season.
Taylor Babbitt, a 5-7 guard from Mililani, is transferring from Division II Northwest Nazarene. After redshirting her freshman season, Babbitt appeared in 35 games over the past two seasons.
Courtney Kaupu, a 5-9 forward, is transferring from Centralia College. She averaged 11.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last year as a sophomore. Kaupu is a Konawaena graduate.
Vulcans hosting baseball clinic
The Junior Vulcan Baseball Clinic will be held Saturday at the Hawaii Hilo baseball field.
The clinic will focus on fundamentals, position skills, hitting, fielding and conditioning. On staff are former Vulcan and owner of Orange County’s All Star Dugout Scott Wallis and former Houston Astros catcher/hitting instructor Brian Bennett.
