A head-on collision on Mamalahoa Highway near Old Onomea Road left one dead and one injured early Saturday morning, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
The crash between a box truck and a sedan happened at 4:10 a.m. about 500 feet south of Old Onomea Road on the Mamalahoa Highway.
There was one occupant in each car and both were pinned and extricated out of the vehicle, the fire department said.
The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead on arrival, officials said.
The truck driver was taken to the hospital.
Police closed the Mamalahoa Highway between Kulaimano Road and the Onomea Scenic Route to investigate.
