Cade Halemanu pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and Carter Hirano scored twice as Pearl City beat Weslaco, Texas, 4-1 in the Little League Junior Division (ages 13-14) World Series on Monday at Taylor, Mich.
Pearl City, which finished with only three hits, scored three runs in the third inning.
In the seventh, Texas had a run in and two runners in scoring position, but Halemanu got a groundout to end it.
Pearl City, which improved to 2-0 in the tournament, will face Frederick County, Va., on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Pearl City scored all its runs in the third inning during a 9-7 win over Ridgewood, N.J.
Pearl City’s Chaesten Chon batted 4-for-4 with a double and Rayson Carriaga drove in two runs.
UH women’s basketball schedule released
The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team’s schedule for 2015-16 includes South Carolina, which made the Final Four last season.
The schedule, released Monday, has 29 games, including 14 contests at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine’s season starts with a road game against Grand Canyon on Nov. 13. Two days later, Hawaii will play at Northern Arizona. Its first home game of the season will be Nov. 20 against Loyola Marymount.
The Rainbow Wahine (23-9 overall, 14-2 Big West last season) will face the Gamecocks on Nov. 29 as part of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout. A day earlier, Hawaii will play Arizona State, which made the round of 16 last season.
Hawaii, the defending Big West regular-season champion, will open conference play Jan. 7 at Long Beach State. Its first Big West home game is Jan. 14 against Cal State Northridge.
The Rainbow Wahine will face Hawaii Hilo in an Oct. 28 exhibition at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Ma’a helps U.S. youth volleyball team go to 3-0
Kaneohe’s Micah Ma’a had four aces and three blocks to help the U.S. boys youth national volleyball team defeat France on Monday and remain unbeaten in the FIVB Boys U19 World Championship in Resistencia, Argentina.
Ma’a, a recent Punahou graduate headed to UCLA, also added three kills as the starting setter in the 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16 victory. Incoming Hawaii freshman Joe Worsley was the starting libero for the Americans, who outlasted both Turkey and Belgium in five sets on Friday and Saturday.
The U.S.(3-0), which has automatically qualified for the round of 16, closes out pool play Tuesday against host Argentina (3-0) in a battle of Pool A leaders.
Oda, Suppa tied for 49th at U.S. Amateur
Honolulu’s John Oda and Kyle Suppa both shot 1-over-par 71 during the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur on Monday at Olympia Fields, Ill.
Oda and Suppa, who both played Olympia Fields Country Club’s North Course, are tied for 49th.
South Carolina’s Matt NeSmith, who played the South Course, leads with a 65.
The top 64 players after Tuesday’s round will advance to match play, with the final set for Sunday.
