Pearl City lost 10-0 to Frederick County (Va.) at the Little League Junior Division (ages 13-14) World Series on Tuesday in Taylor, Mich.
Michael Usa had four of Frederick County’s 13 hits. Pearl City managed just six hits in its first loss of the World Series.
Pearl City (2-1) faces Johnston (2-0) of Iowa on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Hawaii time to complete pool play.
Ma‘a helps U.S. team stay undefeated
Recent Punahou graduate Micah Ma‘a had three kills while setting the U.S. boys youth national volleyball team to a sweep of host Argentina to finish pool play undefeated Tuesday at the FIVB Boys U19 World Championship in Resistencia, Argentina.
The Americans (4-0) topped Argentina (3-1) 25-20, 26-24, 25-23 to win Pool A. Incoming Hawaii freshman Joe Worsley was the starting libero for the U.S., which moves on to the round of 16 and plays Mexico (2-2) in an elimination match on Wednesday.
Oda, Suppa to miss cut at U.S. Amateur
Honolulu’s John Oda and Kyle Suppa are behind the projected cutline after a suspended second round of the U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields, Ill., and with 71 golfers who’ve completed their rounds ahead of Oda, neither will move on to match play.
Oda shot a 4-over 74 Tuesday and is tied for 97th at 5-over 145. Suppa shot a 7-over 77 and is tied for 176th at 8-over 148. Play was suspended due to darkness on Tuesday and 54 players will finish their rounds on Wednesday morning. After that, the top 64 will advance to match play, with the cutline projected at 3 over par.
Seasiders open season ranked 11th
The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team is ranked 11th in the AVCA Division II preseason poll that was released Tuesday.
The Seasiders went 22-6 last year, won the PacWest Conference title and finished the season ranked 11th. Defending champion Tampa topped the preseason poll, followed by Concordia-St. Paul, Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota-Duluth and Nebraska-Kearney.
PacWest members Dixie State and California Baptist received votes in the preseason poll.
HPU women picked to finish fourth
The Hawaii Pacific women’s soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the PacWest Conference preseason poll that was released Tuesday.
Point Loma Nazarene was first with 190 points, followed by California Baptist (180), Azusa Pacific (170) and HPU (143). Hawaii Hilo was picked eighth (91), Brigham Young-Hawaii 11th (61) and Chaminade 13th (44).
Stabile wins master’s diving titles
Honolulu’s Jeff Stabile won three diving titles at the FINA World Masters Championships last week in Kazan, Russia.
Stabile won the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform titles in the men’s 45-49 division. Diving events were held Aug. 12 to 14 at the 10-day event.
