State high school champ Spencer Dunaway and Kauai’s Naea Oda and Miki Ueoka are the recipients of $10,000 in college scholarships from the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association and C. Pardee and Betsy Erdman.
The Erdmans have been supporters of the HSJGA since its inception in 1998. Ueoka, in her second year at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, earned their scholarship. She, Dunaway and Oda will all receive HSJGA College Scholarships, offered annually to seniors in high school or those currently enrolled in college.
Dunaway is a Kamehameha graduate heading to Brigham Young. Oda, from Kapaa, plans to pursue an engineering degree at San Luis Obispo.
Hearn wins in playoff
Oahu Country Club’s John Hearn won the Aloha Section PGA’s National Car Rental Aloha PGA Assistant Championship on the first playoff hole against Juan Rodriquez. The tournament ended Monday at Hoakalei Country Club.
Rodriguez shot a final-round 74 to catch Hearn (74-76) at 150 at the end of regulation.
Hearn collected the $1,000 first prize, but is not able to play in the 39th National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship, Oct. 30–Nov. 2 in Florida. Rodriguez will represent the Aloha Section, along with first alternate Jason Jakovac (74—153).
The field of 126 in the $100,000 national event features players from all 41 PGA sections.
Nam, Kaneshiro get win
Malia Nam and Zachary Kaneshiro broke away with an opening-round 64 Saturday and won the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s Mixed Team Championship Sunday by three shots.
Nam and Kaneshiro closed with an even-par 72 at Poipu Bay for a 136 total. Mari Nishiura and Shawn Lu (70—139) were second.
The teams of Tuan-yu Chiang and Matthew Shen (69) and Zoey Akagi-Bustin and Keegan Loo (73) shared third at 140.
Format was Four-Ball Stroke Play the first day and Foursome Stroke Play the second. The tournament was open to girls and boys between the ages of 13-18.
Nam, a Kaiser sophomore, and Kaneshiro, a Mid-Pacific junior, were the only non-seniors in the top four teams.
