Honolulu’s Shigeru Matsui overcame a variety of weather conditions to finish with an even-par 72 to win the U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier at Pearl Country Club on Wednesday. Golfers barely finished the tournament due to thunder and lightning in the afternoon.
Matsui will represent Hawaii at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., Sept. 26 through Oct. 1. Kiyohito Dezaki of Honolulu posted a 73 to earn the alternate spot, and Aiea’s Mike Kawate finished one stroke behind for the second alternate spot.
